It's a feeling few games outside of PC warfare sims manage. You'll win not because you're overpowered, not because of cheap tricks, not because of unbalanced items, but simply because constant, brutal conflict has forced you to excel to the point where you can see your enemy's strategy before they've even begun to act. It's a difficulty that forces you to learn, to think ahead, to plan, to actually strategize. Your enemies fight like devils because they know that you're going to be just as merciless, and they simply use the same tools you have available. This is, for most of its length, an extraordinarily difficult, but not cheap, game. Leave the body there for three turns, and that soldier is lost to you forever. If you have a critically injured unit and an enemy's turn comes up, you will have a corpse. Enemy melee fighters will tear into your casters as quickly as possible, and spellcasters will bring down carefully measured portions of hell on you at the worst possible moments. The changes from the original game's Playstation release are additive here a few new classes, a few new characters, and options for multiplayer, but nothing that detracts from the perfect investment to reward ratio of the original.Įnemies are bloodthirsty and, in general, cunningly so. Minor quibbles (which we'll pick to the last nit, below) can't hobble one of the best tactical RPG systems out there. Dear Square Enix, Please Fix My Camera The most important part of War of the Lions is its slug-it-out brutal turn-based tactical fantasy combat. If you're the type to skip everything past the introduction, let us summate our review: if you like SRPGs, you need to buy this game.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions adds a spot-on translation, beautiful cut scenes, acceptable multiplayer, and a few other crunchy bits to the already-classic Final Fantasy Tactics. Square Enix can be thanked for re-releasing one of the best games to grace the PlayStation onto the PSP, while fixing virtually every issue and improving on things that were fine to begin with.
